I also had trouble creating a trusted zone for networking that would actually work properly. This is not a firewall for the average Windows user, at all. I finally pressed the mute button on my computer, temporarily, while Look 'n' Stop got done logging the myriad initial Internet transmissions the software and operating system initiates. If you don't have a life, and like to manage your software firewall this intimately, it may be the product for you. But what good is that, really, when it comes to real-time protection and also real-time operation of your applications' two-way Internet communications?Īpparently, Look 'n' Stop was designed to give you this level of granular notification and control - while doing very little automatically on its own. The information is stored in a log file no matter what. While there's an option to turn off the beeping, you pretty much need some sort of notification that there's something you should Look at and potentially Stop (hence the name of the product). The program was announcing the appearance of yet another upload or download filtered packet of data. I can boil down my big problem with Look 'n' Stop to this: After I installed it and ran a small handful of Internet clients, it caused my Windows XP computer to beep on the order of once per second for most of an hour. This is one strange product that's neither silent nor particularly confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, I'm crossing another one off the list: Look 'n' Stop Firewall by Frederic Gloannec and Jean-Francois Catte. Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4.5 costs $20 and supports Windows 2000 and all versions of Windows XP.
The next rev of the product (release date to be determined) might be worth looking at. I'm awaiting a list of the bug fixes it contains. The upgrade from 4.0 to 4.5 was very minor, according to Sunbelt Software.
In the end, the Sunbelt product has a pretty good user experience with a below average level of protection for leak tests.
